An unusually extensive repertoire of organ music from all eras distinguishes the concert organist Carsten Wiebusch. In addition to the complete works of Johann Sebastian Bach and the significant works of organ Romanticism, he is one of the few organists to master the entire organ works of Olivier Messiaen. His appointment as Professor of Organ at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt am Main in 2017 confirms his status as one of the most versatile organists of his generation.
In addition to the orchestral sound spheres of organ symphonies, which captivate his listeners, it is especially the art of organ transcription of piano and orchestral works from all eras that characterizes his work. His particular interest also lies in the romantic tradition of interpretation, such as the works of Bach & Händel (W. T. Best, K. Straube).
Born in 1969, the prizewinner of international competitions (including the Bach Prize Wiesbaden) has already performed in nearly all European countries, Russia, and the USA. His 4 CD recordings released by the label Audite featuring works by Bach, Mussorgsky, Reger, Debussy, etc., received positive press feedback worldwide and were included on the longlist of the Awards of the German Record Critics. Additionally, numerous radio recordings from SWR and NDR are available. In 2022, a complete recording of César Franck's organ works will be released in co-production with SWR, cpo, and Deutschlandradio.
During his studies at the universities of Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, and the Folkwang Hochschule Essen, he received crucial impulses from Hans-Dieter Möller and Jon Laukvik (organ), Ralf Otto (conducting), and Thomas Palm (piano). During this time, he was already the organist of the significant Walcker organ at the Evangelische Kirche Essen-Werden.
Before his role as an organ professor, Carsten Wiebusch served as the Kantor at the Christuskirche Karlsruhe, one of the church music centers of Baden-Württemberg, from 1999 to 2017. Here, he conducted the entire standard oratorio repertoire in exemplary performances and a large number of Karlsruhe premieres with works by Max Reger, Lili Boulanger, Benjamin Britten, or Olivier Messiaen. A regular collaboration as conductor and organ soloist connects Carsten Wiebusch with the Badisches Staatstheater, the Handel Festival (founding of the Handel Festival Choir), and the Badische Staatskapelle.
He also serves as an organist in Karlsruhe at the large Klais organ built in 2010, which is among the most striking organ constructions in recent years, and can regularly be heard in the series “Faszination Orgel.” There is also a close artistic collaboration with the girls' choir of Cantus Juvenum, which he co-founded, with a joint CD production featuring French music set to be released in 2022.
Today, in addition to his work as a university lecturer and concert organist, Carsten Wiebusch is also in demand as a juror for international competitions, as an organ building consultant, and as a lecturer for masterclasses, most recently at the St. Petersburg Conservatory.
