Meanwhile, the stark, heart-wrenching falsetto breakdown of “Photograph” is one of the simplest yet most devastating tracks Dekker has ever made; his melting mix of love and fear forms the core of “Neither Up Nor Down.”

The fragile beauty and complexity of lived relationships are courageously dissected in the album's milestone, “The Dove.” Dekker sings a duet with Ruth, his wife of 22 years and bandmate in Rue Royale. The two sing: “Are we still in love?” Dekker recalls: “Ruth sang the choruses of ‘The Dove’ with me. In those moments, the world was alright.”

“Let Me Take You” reveals a carefree yet determined intent: “I want to see our second half / I want to see it hand in hand with you / I want to make you laugh / I want to stay with you until the end.” Dekker states: “There was a desperation, a sadness that I had to process. The music has overwhelmed me in recent years. It keeps surfacing for me; it pulls me out, gets me out, and leads me onto a better path.”

This “surfacing” led to four Dekker albums in just five years, including “Neither Up Nor Down” directly following “Future Ghosts” (2024), which followed “I Won’t Be Your Foe” (2022) and “Slow Reveal: Chapter One” (2020).

The versatile songwriter grew up in the Midwest of the USA and moved to Ruth's British homeland after the couple founded the indie-folk band Rue Royale. The duo extensively toured Europe from 2008 to 2014 before taking a break to start a family. In 2018, Dekker recorded “We Share Phenomena” with the German composer and old friend Lambert at BMG. In the same year, the reformed Rue Royale released “In Parallel,” before Dekker's solo journey seriously began in 2019.

Are feelings still a challenge for men? Ole Liebl provides a well-founded and nuanced analysis that nevertheless appeals to the community of all genders.

We know them, the silent men. Men who cannot or do not want to talk about their emotions. And when they show feelings, it is mainly anger or pride, but rarely deep sadness, unrestrained joy, or vulnerable love.

Even after more than a hundred years of feminist struggle, women's and queer people's complaints about men's inability to deal with feelings persist. Many are exhausted from the one-sided emotional work and suffer the consequences. Yet men also pay a high price for the stunted development of their emotional lives: their rates of loneliness and suicide, as well as their substance abuse, are significantly higher than those of women.

The cause of this misery is identified as "the patriarchy," with "all men" being called for change, and such terms activate us for feminist struggles. However, a hasty generalization overlooks the complex connections between emotions and masculinity, which result in our continued lack of emotional equality.

Ole Liebl, born in 1992 in a village in Rhineland-Palatinate, studied philosophy and computer science at TU and FU Berlin. On his channels on TikTok and Instagram, he informs about various topics related to toxic masculinities, sexuality, gender, and relationships from a scientific perspective. His book "Freunde lieben" was published in 2024.
