With great warmth – She was only 19 years old when Joana Mallwitz stepped in at short notice in the orchestra pit and saved an opera performance. The Heidelberg ensemble was already aware back then that an extraordinary career was beginning. Just a few years later, Mallwitz became the youngest general music director in Europe. Since her acclaimed debut at the Salzburg Festival in 2020 with Mozart's "Così fan tutte," she has been considered one of the internationally outstanding conductors of her generation. Named "Conductor of the Year" by the magazine "Opernwelt" in 2019 and awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 2023, she has been at the helm of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin since the 2023/24 season.
Mallwitz appreciates the openness of the traditional ensemble: “There is a good foundation of willingness to take risks, openness, and curiosity – I like that.” Even before taking up her position, she got to know the orchestra through guest conducting, including with works by Peter Tchaikovsky, whose music she particularly loves. “On the one hand, there is this traditional, dark, middle-voiced sound, with great warmth, carrying cantabile, also with bitterness,” Mallwitz describes the orchestral culture. “At the same time, they have a very fresh way of making music, a great love for detail, tempo, and articulation. That is a combination that I seek everywhere in music-making.” An ideal profile for Tchaikovsky's emotionally charged 5th Symphony as well as for Antonín Dvořák's powerful, melody-rich Cello Concerto. This work is one of the favorites of the French star cellist Gautier Capuçon, who is celebrated for his expressive depth, intensity, and cantabile phrasing – qualities that particularly suit this concert.
