The gods are not what they used to be. Three of them have descended to earth to find at least one good person. But reality does not allow for a morally good life. Thus, they place all their hopes on the young prostitute Shen Te, who offers them shelter. As a start-up aid for further good deeds, she receives money. She becomes an entrepreneur and acquires a tobacco shop. But doing good and wanting good are two different things...
In the impressive setting of the Sindelfingen Reconciliation Church, Brecht's story about an imaginary Sezuan is brought to life in a modern and playful way. Director Axel Krauße brings Brecht's classic into dialogue with a contemporary perspective – raising central questions about justice, responsibility, and the contradictions in our society.
The production offers a great opportunity to reflect on the complex themes of responsibility and personal freedom, and to be inspired by the powerful portrayal in an unusual, atmospheric space. A poignant engagement with the challenges of the present, which Brecht's masterpiece (premiered in 1943) still raises with all urgency today. And a plea for optimism and a happy ending!
