Annika Brockschmidt & Anja Rützel "Der Bätschcast – LIVE"
Annika Brockschmidt, an expert on America's religious right and author, and Anja Rützel, a long-time trash TV chronicler and journalist, combine their journalistic expertise in "Der Bätschcast," explaining the political dimensions of trash TV and dissecting a surprisingly effective propaganda tool of the US Republicans, disguised behind tearful rose ceremonies and ball gowns. With plenty of visual material, re-enactments, clear words, and humor, they reveal the political depth of the US Bachelor universe: a platform where evangelical worldviews, reactionary role stereotypes, unattainable beauty ideals, and white supremacy are more or less subtly slipped into our living rooms. It becomes clear that reality and real life are closely intertwined. The ever-wilder manifestations of reality TV, despite their garishness, also tell us much about ourselves and our society, and the societal rift that runs through the USA also affects Bachelor Nation. The ideals that the "Bachelor" is based on and that many of its participants represent reveal much about the state of reality TV, the role of conservative and reactionary role models in the crown jewel of all dating shows, and the influence of the religious right on mainstream America.
Annika Brockschmidt studied history, German studies, and war and conflict studies in Heidelberg, Durham, and Potsdam. She is a freelance journalist and author, has worked in the past for the ZDF capital studio, produced the "HistoPod" for the Federal Agency for Civic Education, and is currently co-hosting the podcasts "Feminist Shelf Control" with Rebekka Endler and "Kreuz und Flagge" with Lukas Hermsmeier. In 2022, she received a "Transatlantic Media Fellowship" from the Heinrich Böll Foundation. Her articles have appeared in ZEIT Online, the Tagesspiegel, Freitag, taz, and the Frankfurter Rundschau, among others. Brockschmidt also writes as a senior correspondent for "Religion Dispatches." Her book "Amerika's Gotteskrieger" about the power of the religious right in the USA was a bestseller in 2021.
Anja Rützel, born in 1973, is a journalist, self-professed trash TV fan, and a great animal lover. She works as a freelance author for SPON, SPEX, and SZ-Magazin, among others. However, she prefers to go out into the world and observe unusual animals. She lives in Berlin with her dog Juri.
