Hula Hut And The Seven Seas
ALOHA! Hula Hut and the Seven Seas combines urban life with Hawaiian sounds, a Hawaiian band from Berlin! As a quite unique live band, it plays traditional music from the 1920s and 30s and focuses on the long-forgotten sounds of the great steel guitar groups with classics originally recorded by Sol Hoopii, King Benny Nawahi, Jim and Bob (The Genial Hawaiians), and many others.
The band has been around since 2011 and consists of Sebastian Müller (acoustic/electric steel guitar), Patrick Arp (ukulele, acoustic flattop guitar), and Taylor Savvy (acoustic living room guitar). Yuko Matsuyama sings in the unique Hawaiian Ha´i style (also plays ukulele), and Derek Shirley accompanies on the acoustic bass.
Hula Hut is a passionate total artwork: they perform in traditional costumes as seen in old photos, creating a special atmosphere on stage. Additionally, the feedback from a long-standing Berlin local bar "Cafe Burger" mentions that such strange music has never been heard in their venue, or the absolutely infectious energy in the hall when Yuko played her pieces primarily in the audience during a performance!
Belonging to other music genres, the band members founded this project to learn the Hawaiian repertoire as fans of the music. Sebastian toured and recorded as part of Terranova and Lotterboys (club/remix/dancefloor sensations) and continues to mix music projects for Peaches (Queen of Electroclash), JC Beck ("Frozen" Hollywood film composer), and Jamie Lidell. Patrick has long been involved in the Berlin indie music scene, touring the world with Barbara Morgenstern on keyboards and guitar. Taylor Savvy has recorded and toured with various bands like Iggy Pop, Jamie Lidell, Feist, Peaches, Stereo Total, Bonaparte, and Gonzales. Yuko has achieved many successes as a performing artist in the fields of dance, theater, and sound art, including collaborations with Ballhaus Naunynstraße Berlin, Patrick Catani, and Schneider TM. Derek has played in many ensembles of the noise rock unknown sounds scene, such as Monno, Vladislav Delay Quartet, Miko Vania, Alessandro Bosetti, and Sven Ake Johnasson, bringing his own unique combination of outside/inside harmonic concepts – all perfectly applicable to bass in a Hawaiian context.
“Together, we have trust and respect for Hawaiian sounds and enjoy the healing effect of music as an elixir for modern urban life as Berliners. More sunshine, please!”
