Britten und Purcell
The framework of the concert evening is formed by Benjamin Britten's Folksongs, which are arranged around his second string quartet. The final movement of the quartet is a Chaconne and resembles a bow to this form often used in early English music. The program is supplemented by pieces from Henry Purcell. Thus, the concert is also a tribute to the first recording of the 2nd Britten Quartet – on the B side of the LP, Purcell's “Fantasia Upon One Note” can be heard, in which Britten plays the fifth voice on the viola. This recording from 1946 was performed by the Zorian Quartet, which consisted of four women – like Phlox.
PHLOX
Phlox, ancient Greek for “glow, flame, fire” is a chamber music ensemble founded by cellist Philine Lembeck. The starting point for many concert programs are works from the 19th century. The interpretations of the ensemble achieve special brilliance through historical string instruments: Phlox stands for a transparent, warm, and rich sound.
Phlox creates a crackling atmosphere with its vibrant selection of programs. Contemporary, old, modern: The ensemble combines works from different eras and styles, bringing them into a new light. Phlox chooses performance venues such as elegant halls and beautiful concert churches, but can also be found on tennis courts, in overgrown greenhouses, on diving boards, and in empty office buildings.
The ensemble Phlox consists of musicians of different ages and backgrounds. Experienced through their work with ensembles such as the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, Capella Sollertia, Quatuor Ardeo, and Anima Eterna, they condense approaches and perspectives into a lively exchange and a shared musical language.
