Mike Kaufmann-Portnikow ist ein virtuoser Pianist, Komponist und Filmemacher aus einer Familie von Musikern, Filmemachern und Erfindern. Er debütierte im Alter von 4 Jahren am Klavier. Musikalische Legenden wie Mozart, Art Tatum, George Gershwin, Oscar Peterson und Wladimir Horowitz wurden zu seinen virtuellen Mentoren. Die Klavier-Improvisation prägte schon in jungen Jahren das künstlerische Schaffen des Pianisten. Neben dem klassischen Klavier-Repertoire pflegte er stets die fast vergessene Tradition der stilgebundenen, aber auch die der freien experimentellen Improvisation und den Jazz. Das Klavier als interdisziplinäres Instrument hat für ihn eine ebenso große Bedeutung wie eine umfassende ganzheitliche Sichtweise auf die Musik.

Im Laufe seiner Karriere hat Mike mit renommierten Stars sowohl der europäischen als auch der amerikanischen Szene zusammengearbeitet, darunter Auftritte mit den Klezmatics (USA), dem Glenn Miller USAF Orchestra und die Teilnahme am ikonischen Musical „Cats“ von Andrew Lloyd Webber.

In den letzten fünf Jahren hat Mike eng mit dem Herbie-Hancock-Institute of Jazz zusammengearbeitet, was seinen Platz auf der globalen Musikszene weiter gefestigt hat. Piano improvisation has shaped the artistic creation of the pianist from an early age. In addition to the classical piano repertoire, he has always maintained the almost forgotten tradition of style-bound, as well as free experimental improvisation and jazz.
