In 2015, it marks the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the genocide against the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire. On the death marches to the Syrian desert, about two-thirds of the Armenian population there perished in 1915 / 1916 (according to various estimates, up to 1.5 million people). The German-Armenian Society aims to commemorate this genocide with the photo exhibition and appeal to the historical memory of all people.
The exhibition includes impressive photographs of the tragic events (including from the estate of Armin T. Wegner) and testimonies of the destruction of Armenian cultural heritage. It is complemented by eyewitness accounts of the events of that time, such as those from Dr. Johannes Lepsius, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Fridtjof Nansen, the ambassadors Hans von Wangenheim and Henry Morgenthau, Armenian deportees and forcibly assimilated individuals.
