Rutter Requiem - Konzert zu Allerheiligen
The Rutter Requiem and “Hear my prayer” – a concert for All Saints' Day
Cappella Nova Freiburg, led by Katharina Skala, will perform the Rutter Requiem in the "Ensemble" version for organ and instrumental ensemble (harp, cello, winds, percussion). Featured performers include: Fabian Luchterhandt (organ), Doesjka van der Linden (harp), and Verena Seyboldt (soprano).
Sir John Milford Rutter, CBE (* 1945) is one of the most well-known and successful British composers, conductors, and choral directors of choral and church music of our time. The Requiem is dedicated to his father and is one of his most personal compositions. After its premiere on
October 13, 1985, in Dallas, Texas, the Requiem was performed over 500 times in the USA within six months.
For his Requiem, Rutter adopts the basic structure of a requiem with "Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine," "Kyrie," Sanctus and Benedictus, "Agnus Die," and "Lux aeterna" in Latin, but weaves in a very personal selection of texts from the "Book of Common Prayer," published in 1662, which are sung in English. Rutter captures the spirit of the times, both thematically and musically. He often employs elements from jazz, musical, entertainment, and film music.
The Rutter Requiem will be preceded in the concert for All Saints' Day by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's "Hear my prayer" (1844). It is known to the German audience as "Hör mein Bitten." Mendelssohn originally composed the four-part anthem for his English audience. It will be performed in the English version at the concert. During the reign of Queen Victoria, who was a great admirer of Mendelssohn and often invited him to private concerts, "Hear my prayer" was one of the most famous sacred works by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy.
