Raoul Schrott: Atlas der Sternenhimmel und Schöpfungsmythen der Menschheit - Eröffnungslesung des 38. Freiburger Literaturgesprächs
Welcome: Ulrich von Kirchbach, First Mayor of the City of Freiburg
Our Great Wagon was a divine parrot for the Maya, a one-legged god of thunder for the Incas, and a moose for the Inuit. Each culture represents itself in its own way in the night sky. The constellations serve as a "picture book" of their gods, heroes, animals, plants, and important objects, the significance of which the star myths tell; moreover, the night skies are closely linked to creation myths. The Austrian lyricist, writer, and literary scholar Raoul Schrott documents, after years of research, the knowledge of 17 cultures from all continents about the stars, the sun, the moon, and the planets in his "Atlas of the Night Skies" (Hanser, 2024) – from the ancient Egyptians to the Australian Aborigines.
The Peter-Huchel and Joseph-Breitbach award winner gathers the respective preserved star myths and presents over 500 constellations in his opulent atlas, which are made visible again often for the first time after millennia. Welcome to the pre-premiere of this work, which will be published on November 18, a grand journey through the world and time, to tales full of poetic power and imagination that will lead into a literary conversation with the audience.
