In the German-speaking pop music scene, big names like Clueso, Kraftclub, Cro, and Joris shape the vibrant songwriting culture of the New German Poets. The Freiburg vocal group Anders can be seen in the same musical context. They are Germany's A-Cappella German poets. Their style: catchy melodies and intelligent lyrics. Anders writes smart pop songs in German that take the a cappella performance form seriously and are more than instrumental imitations of current chart hits or nostalgic songs about the flora on the balcony. They captivate their audience not only at their own concerts but also as a supporting act for bands like Revolverheld or Thees Uhlmann.
With their new program "Kurzurlaub," the Freiburg musicians present what they do best: songs that touch the heart. And they do so once again in full measure. The five singers become musical storytellers who write their own stories, sometimes melancholic and profound, sometimes humorous and ironic, and occasionally heart-wrenchingly funny. In a poetic manner, they become observers of the everyday madness called life. Their themes include love, loss, grief, heartbreak, but also friendship, hope, and an unshakeable optimistic outlook on the future – in short: the big and small emotions that make us human.
The five singers approach all of this with an unmistakably self-ironic and humorous style, revealing that they take their art seriously, but not themselves quite so much. With their new program, the Freiburg song poets promise us a "Kurzurlaub" for the heart, mind, and soul, a journey away from everyday life into the musical emotional world of the five singers – which quickly becomes our own. ANDERS are the winners of the St Ingberter Pfanne 2020 (Audience Award & Special Prize of the Minister of Education), the Vokal.total Festival Graz 2019 (1st Prize in the POP category), and the SoLaLa A-Cappella Festival Solingen 2019 (Jury Prize & Audience Award). In 2019, ANDERS was awarded the CARA Award in the USA for their album "Viel Lärm um dich" as the best European A-Cappella album.
