Sensational Intuition - In the Freiburg concert calendar, the Kammerorchester Basel has become a guarantee for top-class concert experiences: Since 2013, the orchestra has regularly been a guest at Albert, combining a keen sense for outstanding playing partners with the skill for clever program constellations. The captivating ensemble sound alone would be an unbeatable argument: Artist personalities visibly add up here to more than the sum of their instruments, and the Munich Merkur recently described it as a "sensation", how "everyone throws themselves into the game with enthusiasm, as if their life depended on it".
At this year's performance by the Basel neighbors, Sibelius' Andante festivo and Johannes Brahms' sun-drenched 3rd Symphony frame the evening. Clara Schumann was among the first admirers of this composition: "What a work, what poetry, the most harmonious mood throughout, all movements like cast in one go, a heartbeat, each movement a jewel!"
As a soloist, one can look forward to Yulianna Avdeeva's debut at Albert, internationally acclaimed not least for her victory at the 2010 Warsaw Chopin Competition, being the first woman since Martha Argerich in 1965. With the "artist who can truly make the piano sing" (Gramophone), Beethoven's 3rd Piano Concerto is in clever, knowledgeable hands. Although sketches for this work date back to 1796, there were still "incomprehensible hieroglyphics" in the hastily completed piano notes at the premiere in 1803, which only the playing composer could interpret. The listeners experienced then the novelty of a piano concerto of symphonic scope - with an unfathomably gentle second movement that allowed the pianoforte to be felt in a completely new way and a finale that united almost naive simplicity with intricate fugal artistry.
