Tord Gustavsen Trio
Tord Gustavsen is certainly Norway's most outstanding jazz pianist. Although his recordings can take many different forms, the Norwegian's music consistently captures a discreet, minimalist sound approach that places him squarely at the center of modern Nordic jazz.
With his album "Seeing" (release: September 2024 on ECM), Tord Gustavsen opens a new, complex chapter in his series of celebrated trio recordings, which he began in 2003 with the now-classic album "Changing Places." The new recording, with its compact, concentrated song forms, "reflects my personal development; I am getting older and focusing more and more on the essentials in life and in music," says the Norwegian pianist. With five original compositions, two chorales by Johann Sebastian Bach, a traditional Norwegian hymn, and the 19th-century English hymn "Nearer, My God, to Thee," Tord, along with his long-time companion Jarle Vespestad on drums and Steinar Raknes on double bass, dives deeply into his unmistakable blend of jazz, blues, gospel, Scandinavian folk, and church music. "The melodies are appreciated," as Tord puts it; the interplay of the group draws strength from restraint and patiently builds the music toward its high points, while Gustavsen, a true master of the trio format, shapes it all with his delicate touch and his uniquely subtle gospel glow.
