Nicolas Grospierre is one of the most outstanding contemporary Polish artists. He was born in Geneva in 1975, grew up in Paris and lives in Warsaw. He is primarily associated with photography, which he has been practicing for twenty-five years, but his work also includes installations, objects, art books, and video films. One theme that preoccupies Grospierre is the utopia of limitless growth. The illusory nature of modernist ideals is most evident in architecture and urban planning, which are central subjects of Grospierre's interest. His work has received numerous awards, including the Golden Lion at the Architecture Biennale in Venice (together with Kobas Laksa), leading to the publication series Modern Forms by Prestel Verlag and exhibitions at renowned institutions such as the Architecture Association in London.

The critique expressed in Photography Degrowth is not total; it does not involve the destruction or abolition of capitalism. Rather, it is a deeper reflection, a moment of contemplation about where our civilization is heading, what needs to be changed, and what can be retained because it is great and inspiring.

The Photography Degrowth exhibition gathers a series of iconic photographs and objects by Grospierre, complemented by new works presented for the first time at the Polish Institute. Each work displayed relates in a peculiar and non-obvious way to the concept of post-growth and revolves around architecture. Alongside pieces like "The Collection that Grows" (2014 and ongoing) and "The House that Grows" (2012), visitors will also see "BBL Unltd" (2020) and "Axonocity" (2018). Works premiering publicly include "Tetranoi" (2021) and "Carceri Imaginari" (2022).

Each of Grospierre's solo exhibitions is an autonomous whole composed of individual elements, giving visitors the sense of stepping into another spatial and mental realm. This sensation is challenging to articulate but, unlike flat reproductions of architectural photographs accompanied by press texts, it offers a sensory and unique encounter. This sentiment is likewise found in Photography Degrowth, where photographs are presented in a spiral that "shrinks back," unfolds, collapses, and meanders, appropriating the gallery space, overwhelming and captivating like the notion of boundless progress and growth.
