Ein Abend mit Thomas Kraft und der Band »tell me no lies«

Unser Blick gilt Amerika, dem Land der unbegrenzten Möglichkeiten, und seiner Musik. Genauer gesagt: Dem anderen Amerika. Nicht dem Land, das wir als Jugendliche idealisierten, nicht dem Land, aus dem alles kam, was wir uns wünschten. Dem Land der Träume und Mythen, dem Land der Cowboys und der weiten Prairie, dem Land der Freiheit und Gleichheit, in dem das Streben nach Glück in der Verfassung festgeschrieben ist. Das Land hat sich verändert – und seine Musik hat sich verändert.

Ein Abend über das heutige Amerika und seine Musik muss auch ein politischer Abend sein. Das Land ist gespalten, die politischen Lager geben sich unversöhnlich. Diese Situation ist nicht neu und sie hat auch die bislang heile Welt der Countrymusik erschüttert. Die traditionelle Musik aus Nashville, die vor allem die ländliche Idylle, den Staub der endlosen Highways, Bier, Whiskey, »God´s Country« und den unerschütterlichen Patriotismus seiner Bewohner preist, hat sich in den letzten dreißig Jahren erneuert. Sie nennt sich jetzt Americana und nimmt in ihren Geschichten auch die Armut und das Elend der Hinterwäldler in den Blick, erzählt von Drogen, Migration, Rassismus und sozialen Problemen.

Und so nehmen wir Sie an diesem Abend mit auf eine musikalisch-literarische Reise in die Appalachen, in die Sümpfe Floridas, in das Farmland der Flyover Countries, die sich abgehängt und vernachlässigt fühlen und in denen es brodelt und in denen sich das zukünftige Schicksal Amerikas entscheiden wird. Nicht nur, weil am 5. November 2024 Präsidentschaftswahlen anstehen. Our focus is on America, the land of unlimited possibilities, and its music. More precisely: the other America. Not the country we idealized as teenagers, not the land from which everything we desired came. The land of dreams and myths, the land of cowboys and vast prairies, the land of freedom and equality, where the pursuit of happiness is enshrined in the constitution. The country has changed - and its music has changed.

An evening about today's America and its music must also be a political evening. The country is divided, the political factions are uncompromising. This situation is not new and it has also shaken the previously idyllic world of country music. The traditional music from Nashville, which mainly extols rural idyll, the dust of endless highways, beer, whiskey, "God's Country," and the unwavering patriotism of its inhabitants, has renewed itself in the past thirty years. It is now called Americana and in its stories, it also addresses the poverty and misery of rural dwellers, tells of drugs, migration, racism, and social problems.

And so, on this evening, we take you on a musical-literary journey to the Appalachians, to the swamps of Florida, to the farmland of the Flyover Countries, which feel disconnected and neglected, and where tensions are simmering, and where the future destiny of America will be decided. Not only because presidential elections are scheduled for November 5, 2024.
