DAS GRÜNE BAND : GRENZGANG - eine Deutschlandwanderung an der Grenze, die das Land teilte
DAS GRÜNE BAND : GRENZGANG
Das grüne Band : Grenzgang - a hiking journey through Germany along the border that divided the country
For over 40 years, Germany was divided. A 1393 km long border ran through the country. Barbed wire, minefields, barking dogs, searchlights, and even gunfire were part of everyday life here.
Having grown up in the shadow of this border, in Berlin during the Cold War, photojournalist Roland Marske once again comes into close contact with German-German history.
However, it is not always easy to even make out the course of the border. It has, quite literally, grown over with grass. The former death strip has become a green band that is now Germany's largest nature reserve.
This extraordinary journey, on foot, with a backpack, tent, and camera, is a search for places where one can still listen to the history of the division. It is also a unique nature experience through the wilds of Germany.
The hiking journey across Germany goes over the mountains of Vogtland, the Slate Mountains, the Rhön, and the Harz, through the valleys of the Saale, Werra, and Elbe, traverses Altmark and Lüneburg Heath, and takes us to castles, monasteries, and medieval half-timbered towns all the way to the Baltic Sea, to the ocean.
Masterfully photographed, moving, told with much wit and historical knowledge, Roland Marske shares his thoughts and experiences from his "Grenzgang" and allows you to partake in his adventure in his own country!
