Der Kontrabass - Humorvoller Monolog von Patrick Süskind
Yes, it's not easy being a double bassist in a large orchestra. The protagonist of the piece (Franz Josef Strohmeier in a showcase role) tells us about the everyday life with the largest, most unwieldy and "least soloistic" solo instrument, about his troubles and dreams, his feelings of inferiority and – his secret love for the soprano Sarah! His sometimes complaining dissatisfaction, but also his sharp-tongued criticism of those who are to blame for his situation, up to brilliantly played "self-satisfaction," reveal the abysses of the artist's existence. Süskind has written a solo for an actor - empathetic, bitterly funny, and full of spirit.
The monologue "Der Kontrabass," premiered 35 years ago at the Munich Cuvilliés Theatre and long become an equally famous and entertaining piece of theater history, made Patrick Süskind instantly known. With the novel "Das Parfüm" (adapted into a film by Tom Tykwer) he soon achieved worldwide fame.
Press reviews:
“Franz Josef Strohmeier plays the one-act monologue so compellingly, convincingly, wittily with depth, and robustly succinctly... Stormy applause for the delightful performance - Chapeau!" H N A
“Strohmeier strikingly embodies a tragically comic figure, lonely and unable to form connections, creating with his performance a parable about today’s self-centered society.” Süddeutsche Zeitung
“A role made for Strohmeier - a great performance!” FLZ
