Basically, it should of course be called: A bow to the phenomenon Leonard Cohen, the Canadian singer-songwriter legend, who was so much more: a writer, poet, painter...
Where do you end up when you embark on a search for this phenomenon?
The Humility "There's a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in" – a quote that summarizes Cohen well. Darkness and light. An artist who struggles with depression throughout his life and yet never loses his sense of humor, neither in his lyrics nor on stage. Always at peace with himself, humble. Even in his last interviews, he talks about how he cannot sing and never could. You can search for a long time and find no scandals triggered by him – very untypical for a rock star of his caliber. Although “folk star” would probably be the more accurate description. Where does this humility come from, and how does it influence his work?
The Language One cannot speak of Cohen without mentioning the language and the significance it held for him. He repeatedly states, as he was initially an author, that language is the driving force for him, and poetry is his great theme – which is why there is a story behind almost every Cohen song. Not a single song is incidental, none is written without great significance. On the contrary, isn't there always a (often personal) story behind it or a philosophical engagement?
The Women In the press, Cohen is described as “obsessed with them.” He repeatedly dedicates songs to the women in his life - who are these people that inspired, supported, and promoted him, and what are their shared stories?
“A Thousand Kisses Deep” explores these questions based on biographical milestones, anecdotes, texts, and – of course – approximately 15 songs. Understanding the phenomenon of Cohen in its entirety is hardly possible, yet one can hope for an approximation.
By and with Kathrin von Steinburg and Jakob Tögel
"The two have not simply reproduced the warmth and spirit (...) without kitsch, but they find their own sound. Especially their duet singing gives a hint of how a depth of a thousand kisses might feel. After 90 minutes, no one really wants to leave..." (Abendzeitung)
