Der Ursprung der Welt - Premiere
Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Liv Strömquist
“Happy birthday to her, happy birthday to her, three times happy!”
You are warmly invited to the most spectacular party of the millennium: We are celebrating the 300,000th birthday of the vulva! To celebrate the day, we will reflect on the life of the vulva, remember all the funny and exciting moments, be surprised, and give our full attention to the birthday child!
“300 years ago, the female orgasm was mentioned in every medical book and it was assumed to be important for reproduction.”
Hanni Lorenz and Marie-Paulina Schendel, as hosts, will pop the corks and offer the guests a colorful party, featuring all the classic birthday games such as sack hopping, egg running, or hot candy. In search of mama's garden, memories will be reminisced, stories will be told of men who are too interested in what is referred to as “the female sexual organ”, and the question will be raised as to why the female orgasm of today is supposedly so much harder to reach than the male's.
With ease, “Der Ursprung der Welt” shows how absurd and deeply rooted patriarchal structures shape the notions of femininity. The play takes us on a journey from antiquity to the present, holds a mirror up to society, and invites us to a special birthday party – sometimes sweet, sometimes sour, sometimes hard, sometimes soft, just like a perfectly assembled mixed candy bag.
After their Hamburg debut in November 2023 at the monsun.theater, the performance collective frau emma gelb now opens the new venue of the house with “Der Ursprung der Welt”. The collective develops participatory formats and combines them with classic acting, inviting the audience to become an active part of the production. With their work, they explore central societal and human issues – as in this production, the cultural and biological origins of humanity.
A production by frau emma gelb supported by the monsun.theater and the Ilse und Dr. Horst Rusch Stiftung. “Der Ursprung der Welt” has been published by avant-verlag.
