Zoe Edgecomb dedicates herself to the Rhine: The people of today know the Upper Rhine as a powerful river, brought under human control through canalization – a trading corridor, a border between federal states and nations. Besides the regulated river from Tulla's vision, remnants of the former winding river still flow. Through a combination of impressions gathered during walks, as well as an intensive analysis of historical and contemporary maps, Zoe Edgecomb has created a multimedia landscape portrait of this complex system. Tracing topographical contour lines, printing with sun and water, sitting on mossy tree trunks to sketch the quiet Rhine meadows, capturing the movement of water, birds, and insects on video – an invitation to a captivating world.
Sylvia Kiefer, inspired by this, engages with the waters of the flood, but also with Hildegard von Bingen, known as the Saint of Bingen on the Rhine, who inspired the artist for the installation “Hagesusse”.
“... thereafter he released a dove,” is the title of one of her large-format paintings. Placed in front of it are sculptural objects that appear amorphous and are covered with plaster. The story of the flood with Noah, who built an ark, feels staged like a set design ... Nothing is definitively defined. Everything remains as a possibility, a state of suspension between past and future. A mood between wakefulness and dream. Ice floes, frozen animal beings, melting ice, flood-like streams of water, wandering animals. The blue like a protective shell around the hidden, which only allows the situation to be guessed at.
Both artists use “used” materials: Zoe Edgecomb uses old bed sheets for her technique (cyanotype, painting), Sylvia Kiefer uses awnings as a painting surface as well as object material.
