DELFEAYO MARSALIS QUINTET FEAT. ERIC ALEXANDER
When it comes to the name Marsalis, jazz enthusiasts have a wide selection: The pianist Ellis Marsalis, who passed away in 2020, was the father of six sons, all born where jazz was born: in New Orleans. Four became jazz musicians, and Delfeayo Marsalis is the trombonist in the family. With his star-studded quintet, he performs standards, original compositions, blues, and ballads – all immediately infectious and presented with a healthy dose of humor. Delfeayo Marsalis is versatile and successful: as a producer, as a composer for film and television, or as the founder of the Uptown Music Theatre for the education of children and teenagers, with whom he has developed five musicals. As a bandleader, Marsalis has released ten albums, the latest being "Crescent City Jewels." And Delfeayo Marsalis is one who has toured with true legends of the past: Ray Charles, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Slide Hampton. "Art Blakey," he once said, "taught me a lot about patience and how to build a solo. And from Max Roach, I learned that I have to be in top form at all times."
BILL LAURANCE
The pianist Bill Laurance knows how to handle the big musical picture, but he often puts it aside to manipulate nothing but the 88 keys of the piano. As a founding member of the band Snarky Puppy (five Grammys), the versatile Brit participates in music that presents a jazzy-urban sound with collective verve. Bill Laurance studied classical composition, works with big bands like the WDR Big Band and the Metropole Orkest, and collaborates with ballet companies, as well as writing film music. In such moments, one becomes part of the community and lets oneself be carried by the flow of teamwork. A person who collaborates as much must also sometimes be fully within themselves. He is as a soloist: For over ten years, the 45-year-old has been exploring the possibilities of the piano. On his latest album "Lumen" (ACT 2025), he explores the entire spectrum of a concert grand piano in the space between composition and freedom. While many of his pieces contain a strong improvisational component, others are fully composed and clearly defined in their structures. Solo, one sees oneself in the mirror, sets the rules – and can also break free from them. Bill Laurance is interested in the power that arises from contrast.
SCOTT KINSEY GROUP
With the Scott Kinsey Group, pure fusion jazz takes the stage to close the festival. Keyboardist Scott Kinsey was a companion of the great Joe Zawinul and has spectacularly assimilated his musical spirit into a 2.0 version of dense synthesizer textures, complex harmonies, and pulsating grooves. Musical ideas are mirrored, shifted, rhythmically broken, and developed in surprising directions. The music remains organic and immediate – an intense live experience that speaks to both mind and body.
Scott Kinsey was a member of the fusion band Tribal Tech for many years. He contributed to the music of the "Ocean's" films ("Eleven," etc.), played with countless greats of the fusion scene, and created with "We Speak Luniwaz" (2019) the blueprint for his adaptation of the music of Joe Zawinul and Weather Report. With the new album "Thought Distortions," the Scott Kinsey Group re-explores the genre of fusion jazz. The internationally composed band shows how vibrant and visionary modern jazz-fusion sounds today – innovative, virtuosic, and full of creative tension.
