Führung durch die Altstadt in Wetzlar
6/19/2025 / 2:00 PM
Wetzlar, Treffpunkt: Stadtmodell am Dom

In the old town with its medieval squares and winding alleys, charming half-timbered houses stand alongside representative buildings from the time of the Reichskammergericht, shaping the cityscape. Johann Wolfgang Goethe stayed in Wetzlar in the summer of 1772. His experiences inspired the poet to his first major literary success, the epistolary novel "The Sorrows of Young Werther". Also fascinating is the unfinished gothic cathedral, which reflects a piece of the city's history through its combination of Romanesque and Gothic style elements.

Führung durch den Dom
6/21/2025 / 5:30 PM
Wetzlar, Treffpunkt: Haupteingang des Domes

The former collegiate church - the Wetzlar Cathedral - is one of the most interesting church buildings in Germany. Its striking appearance has evolved over the centuries due to numerous expansions. Behind the Gothic west facade, one can find the remnants of the late Romanesque church. Another special feature is that the cathedral has been used jointly by the Catholic and Protestant communities since the Reformation.

Mathias Tretter: «Souverän»
6/21/2025 / 7:30 PM
Nidda-Wallernhausen, Alter Dorfladen

„Sovereign is he who decides on the state of emergency.“ – Carl Schmitt was also such a bigmouth; otherwise, he wouldn't have become Göring's egg liqueur. Germany's most notorious advocate wrote the famous line in 1928, and since then we have been chewing on it. Barely a hundred years later, there is a state of emergency at every corner – but who is sovereign?

Some say this, others: the people, the truth lies somewhere completely different, as always. Mathias Tretter once again finds it with his friend Ansgar: “Being high is a state of emergency, and I have chosen it.” Democracy may gradually be losing its authority, but that doesn’t mean one has to lose self-control. Unless one wets oneself from laughing – but isn't that the most sovereign thing of all?

„They will whinny,“ says Tretter, who has now finally been awarded every cabaret prize since the Salzburger Stier 2023. Nevertheless, his latest piece is his funniest: “You will chuckle, snort, gasp, and in the end, go home invulnerable.” In other words: Sovereign. The name is program.

On violin, the Mongolian instruments Shudraga and horsehead fiddle, as well as harp, Hagit Halaf, Enkhtuya Jambaldorj, and Samira Memarzadeh showcase the variety of string instruments – from delicate to powerful, from improvised to polyphonic.

"Ein charmantes Scharmützel" - Führung im Kostüm mit Lotte und Goethe
6/22/2025 / 3:00 PM
Wetzlar, Treffpunkt: Tourist-Information

Charlotte Buff and Johann Wolfgang Goethe, the dream couple of German literature, entertainingly answer the question: What happens to the stormy Frankfurt poet after the Wetzlar summer and how does the rest of the life of the Amtmann's daughter from the Deutschordenshof unfold?

After Goethe's secret departure from Wetzlar on September 11, 1772, the suicide of Karl Wilhelm Jerusalem in October 1772 shakes the city. Johann Christian Kestner feels partly responsible and writes to his friend Goethe in Frankfurt about the sequence of events; Goethe, after this description, knows how his Werther novel will end... So the question arises, whose story is being told in the novel "The Sorrows of Young Werther": the love story between Charlotte Buff and Johann Wolfgang Goethe or the story of the unfortunate Karl Wilhelm Jerusalem? Charlotte Buff and Johann Wolfgang Goethe might not agree so easily...
