Sultan Stevenson is one of the most exciting young jazz musicians in London. His musical training began at the Julian Joseph Jazz Academy and with Tomorrow’s Warriors, where he was taught by renowned jazz figures such as Julian Joseph, Gary Crosby, Simon Purcell, and Robert Mitchell. In 2023, he completed his jazz piano studies at the Guildhall School of Music.
Already in 2020, Sultan drew attention with his unique artistic expression. With his trio, consisting of Jacob Gryn (bass) and Joel Waters (drums), he performed his own compositions and thrilled audiences at renowned venues such as Jazz Re:freshed, The Jazz Café, The Vortex, and the EFG London Jazz Festival. His musical influences include McCoy Tyner, Kenny Kirkland, Geri Allen, and Ahmad Jamal.
His debut album was released in 2022 and received great critical acclaim. The release at the London Jazz Café was completely sold out – a milestone for Sultan and the young London jazz scene. Since then, he has been touring internationally and has established himself as one of the most exciting new voices in jazz.
In 2023, Sultan was awarded the Parliamentary Jazz Media Award for "Best Newcomer." In 2024, he performed at events including the SXSW Festival in Texas, the jazzahead! Festival in Germany, as well as the Brick Lane Jazz Festival and the Cheltenham Jazz Festival.
With his second album "El Roi," which was released in 2024, Sultan continues on his successful path. The release was celebrated with a sold-out concert at the Southbank Centre. The subsequent European tour will take him and his trio to prestigious venues such as Duc De Lombards in Paris, BIX in Stuttgart, and Jassmine in Warsaw.
In 2025, Sultan was nominated for the Jazz FM Award in the "Best Newcomer" category – another testament to his rapid rise in the international jazz scene.
Sultan Stevenson is undoubtedly a name to remember – a pianist shaping the jazz of today and tomorrow.
