Program description:
Between the scent of freshly ground coffee, the soft clinking of fine cups, and muted conversations at small marble tables, a world full of music and poetry once emerged. The coffee houses of Europe, especially in Vienna, Paris, and Prague, were around 1900 the second living room or waiting room for many writers, musicians, and many creative people.
As piano sounds filled the room, painters discussed colors, poets wrote their thoughts in notebooks, and composers drew inspiration from the rhythm of the city and the special atmosphere of the cafés. Amidst candlelight and piles of newspapers, stories, melodies, and artworks were created that still resonate today. Each person is their own, everyone watches closely with eagle eyes, to be seen and to see, to relate to one another, to distance from each other. People love each other, need each other, and sometimes even hate each other.
Writers like Tucholsky, Altenberg, K. Kraus, among others, L. van Beethoven, Mahler, Satie, Chopin, F. Hollaender, etc., were passionate coffee house visitors.
Drawing from this rich offering, the three artists Catharina Marquet, vocals, Mona Creutzer, recitation, and Galina Ryzhikova, piano, provide an entertaining and cheeky combination of music and text to capture this cosmos of creativity and human variations on a journey through coffee house culture, sometimes contemplative, sometimes spirited and elegant.
